My Journey

Nishal Mohan, PhD

My path from humble beginnings in Guyana to founding mohuman has fueled a lifelong mission to harness the power of emerging technology for social good, bridging the digital divide and creating opportunities for all.

My Story

I was born in a small village in Guyana, where electricity and basic technology were luxuries we didn’t have. Moving to the Bahamas as a child opened my eyes to the possibilities technology could bring, igniting a passion that’s driven me ever since. At 16, I arrived in the U.S. with big dreams but faced the steep challenges of being an immigrant in a new world. Those obstacles only fueled my determination, and years later, I earned a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Princeton University. My early work in RNA virus research and public health laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong mission: using science and technology to empower those most often left behind.

After leading groundbreaking efforts in biosecurity, where I founded the world’s first international non-profit focused on public health and safety, I transitioned into shaping national science and technology policy. As a policy fellow at the National Science Foundation, I developed the first-ever Federal Big Data R&D Strategic Plan for the U.S. Government, helping position the nation at the forefront of data and AI innovation. But I never forgot the communities that could be left behind. This led me to develop smart city solutions, working with over 30 cities to ensure technology could be a force for good in everyone’s lives, not just the privileged.

In 2018, I founded mohuman, a nonprofit born out of my unwavering belief that digital equity is a right, not a privilege. When the pandemic hit, our work became more urgent than ever. We launched innovative solutions like moNET, a community-owned internet network, and moDAT, a digital inclusion platform, helping marginalized communities stay connected when they needed it most. Our efforts played a pivotal role in securing $65 billion for broadband expansion through the Digital Equity Act, proving that even in the most challenging times, we can create lasting change.

From my early days in Guyana to building a nonprofit that challenges the status quo, my journey has always been about one thing: making sure technology lifts people up, not leaves them behind.

I invite you to explore more and join me in continuing to bridge the digital divide and create a future where innovation serves everyone, especially those who need it most.
